Learning to ride technical ascents can be both challenging and a lot of fun. Getting through the difficult elements of a climb can be aided by learning to create a surge with your foot speed. Simon illustrates some of the basic points of a surge below.

There is a pretty simple technique which can greatly improve your success rate climbing switchbacks. This technique can also save a lot of energy, since you will be able to just relax and focus on a few simple ideas instead of overthinking while climbing.

When climbing technical terrain, I use a technique I call surging. A surge is where I create rapidly enhanced foot speed (pedaling speed) just before a technical crux within a climb.
